A Grand Maritime Union ship is sailing into Port Royal, and Senior Trader Black is looking out his cabin window at the approaching shore. He begins to get ready. When he emerges from his cabin, he is dressed in common clothing. He has nothing on him but the little gold in his pockets and the map of the west indies in the bag strapped to his side. He sneaks around his own ship until he reaches a rowboat. He is about to tuck inside when he is stopped by a sailor.
"Here, ???. I know I can't convince you to stay, but take this." He hands ??? a green and gold coin. "This coin is priceless. The GMU calls them ancient coins. I inherited three from my mother. This coin could get you whatever you want if you are desperate. I think you may need it."
[]
"Goodbye, friend."
Black lowers the rowboat quietly and sets out on the water. He rows in under the docks and climbs up onto the stone. It's a nice town, the governor's house looms over on a hill away from the shops that sit right here by the docks. Looking around you can see the ship you arrived on is beginning to dock.
[KIND FELLOW] he/him, British accent
First interaction
- He greets you. You're new. Welcome to Port Royal!
Where should I go?
- Don't know where to go? I sure hope I'm not dealing with a pirate! I jest, I know you're looking for fun. There is a certain tavern near the edges of the forest that has what you're looking for. He winks at you aggressively.
What do you want to do?
There is nothing of interest to you in the town right now.
[CONTINUE]
By the time you get to the tavern it is dark. Above the door it reads “Boon's and Bosoms” and you suddenly understand why this tavern isn’t quite respectable.
There are many people in the tavern, but there are 4 pirates yelling at someone sitting at a table, Garret Xavier.
Pirate 1: "What'ya mean ya don' even have a ship? Are ya tryin' ta make fools ah us? Or maybe ya're just tryin' ta catch some pirates for a quick coin!"
Pirate 2: "Yeah!"
Pirate 3: "You've gotta be barking mad, mate."
Pirate 2: "Yeah, an I heard from Gangrene he was keepin' some freak in his room here. That bird thing!"
Pirate 4: "Prob'ly doin some nasty shit with it like a pervert..."
Pirate 1: "Har har har! What say we just rob 'im an' take 'is shit, kill the bird, too! Wouldn' mind some roast chicken..."
Pirate 2: "Yeah!"
Pirate 3: "Yeah!"

There are many people in the tavern. Of interest, there is a SMALL PERSON in a large flat hat in the corner, the BARKEEP and a LITTLE BOY, and some MEN OF LOW MORAL FIBER. There is also the door to LEAVE.
What do you want to do?
[SPEAK TO TAVERN LURKERS]
[SMALL PERSON / GASPAR]
First interaction
- Hello.
What's your name?
- I’m Jose, who's asking?
Introduction
- I’ve got a map here to somewhere valuable if you’re interested, but I’m hungry, and I don’t have any money for food.
Returning with food
- Thank you. he shows you the map. I have been wanting to go to this place for a while. I'm trying to get away. The Grand Maritime Union cannot get their big ships through the fog bank around it, so that is where I want to be. I have no idea where it is though. It is called the "Sea of Thieves." That fog is called the "Devil’s Shroud," and the people I have asked about it have simply refused to tell me what is so terrible about it. I do not see how fog can be so dangerous. He gives you the MAP TO THE SEA OF THIEVES
After inspecting map
- It’s somewhere north of South America, but I’ve got no idea where the islands labeled here are. Here, look. There’s lots of money there, everybody says. I tell you this in hopes that you let me join your crew, there’s no way I can get anywhere on my own.
[BARKEEP] she/her
First interaction
- What do you want? Food, drink, or some help?
Food/drink
- We’ve got ale and grog for something shiny. Food’ll cost ya a tad more.
How can we make money?
- If yer lookin’ for easy money yer outta luck.
Where can I get a ship?
- There’s a SHIPWRIGHT back in town near the docks. You don’t look like you’ve got enough money for a ship though.
leaving
- You best be leaving soon, Xavier, I can only keep your friend hidden for so long.
[LITTLE BOY] he/him
First interaction
- Hi! Mum said not to talk to the dirty rotten people that come in here!
[MEN OF LOW MORAL FIBER] they/them
First interaction
- Ahoy! We might appear whenever you get stuck and need help!
What do I do?
- The SMALL PERSON over there has a funny map.
- You should check in on your roommate, Garret.
How do I get a ship?
- Need a ship? You don’t have enough money, you can make a deal with the SHIPWRIGHT Or, maybe since it’s dark and you might be able to nick a small one without anyone noticing, if you’re careful.
[LEAVE AND CONTINUE]
Outside there’s a sign pointing back to town.
What do you want to do?
[GO TO TOWN]
There’s lots of shops. Only some have their lights on since it’s late. You can see the shipyard off in the distance.

- Hmmm… give me all your money and I’ll give you the worst ship here?
Do you work here?
- Okay you caught me, I’m here with my crew
and we’re tryna steal a big ship, alright? Now scram n’ stay mum an’ I won’t tell on you neither.
[SNEAK PAST]
The man hears you trip, looks directly at you, then looks around, goes back to work, and starts whistling.
You walk down the dock and find a small but cozy ship. Give SHIP'S LOG.
GASPAR - It is bad luck to sail an unnamed ship. [DRAW AND NAME SHIP]

What do you want to do?
March 18, 1718, afternoon
After two days of sailing you reach Isla Mosquito and resupply. You can see the Devil’s Shroud out on the sea to the north, a deep red mist that stretches across the horizon and into the sky. It looks like it’s rolling into itself but never changes size. The nameless port you’ve docked at seems unclaimed by Great Britain and friendly to pirates to boot. There’s a tavern at the top of the hill, a shipwright selling supplies, and a map shop on the docks in front of the town. The people here might know a bit more about what awaits you in the Sea of Thieves.
What do you want to do?
[UNFIRED PISTOL TAVERN]
ROWENNA and the MEN OF LOW MORAL FIBER.
Talk about Pirate Lord or things that may be in the Sea of Thieves.
Beyond the ocean, rocks and mist, lies a secret none can
tell.
Filled with booty, grog and reminisce, its my crews true place to dwell.
Oh where will I find a haven safe to stash my hoard?
Hush
now, you sea urchin! Just take it to the Lord!
He waits amongst a pile of gold.
He wants them chests,
unearthed, found and stole.
Just give em' up and then you'll see...Pirate Legend, maketh
thee.
Now set sail for destiny! Oh hail, the Pirate Lord!
Beyond horizon, reefs and port. Be a place that none can
see.
Stocked with parchment, grog, and long lost maps. It be filled with
mystery.
Oh how will I make my ship a legend that's adored?
Hush now
you land lubber! You haves to please the Lord!
He waits amongst a pile of gold.
Tell him, the things, to
your crew never told.
Just serve him and then you'll see...Pirate Legend maketh
thee.
Now angle those sails for destiny! Oh hail, the Pirate Lord!

March 19, 1718
You feel uneasy as you sail along the edges of the red fog. You can almost see moving shapes inside. You sail past a few small sandbars, and an island with a shipwreck on it, but there’s a ship sitting in the bay and you don’t want to start a fight.
What do you want to do?
After a day of sailing, you finally see the opening in the Shroud. It’s small, but big enough for your ship. Inside it is dark and you can see the water churning.
What do you want to do?
You sail into the small hole and you suddenly feel as if you’ve made a decision you can’t take back. The path inside is winding, and soon enough, the light from outside is diminished. Everything is red. Your ship creaks and complains as you weave it through the tunnel of mist, carefully staying away from the red clouds that surround you, the rocks in your path, and the shipwrecks that litter them. Lightning. You can see things moving in the dark mist. A large creature. Tentacles. Wings. Eyes. Or maybe just your imagination. Rain begins to pour as the waves slam away at your ship. Your throat burns as you can taste metal in your mouth. It’s hot. Crash. A sound from below deck. Water is coming into the hull.
What do you want to do?
The ship is slammed by something large in the water and reels into the mists. Two of you fall and hit your heads, knocked out, but ??? remains awake and tries to grab at the wheel. They start choking on the mist and pass out.

You all wake up on your ship, creaking and barely afloat, but still on top of the water. You are somewhere completely different from the terrors of the shroud. A gentle wind blows and the sea spray tastes sweet. The sun is rising in the east and the stars are fading away. You can see some islands around. They are beautifully tropical; palm trees, flat beaches, and tall smooth rocks. You’ve made it to the Sea of Thieves.
