Chapter 1 - The Easy Start

March 21, 1718
You wake up in the Captain's Head Tavern on Golden Sands outpost, having celebrated your arrival the night before. ??? wakes up drooling on GASPAR's map, with the riddle facing up. Now that it is the morning, you are the only people in the building other than the Tavernkeeper, TINA, two MYSTERIOUS STRANGERS, the MEN OF LOW MORAL FIBER, and a man in ratty clothing (DUKE)

What do you want to do?

[TINA]
First interaction
- I'm Tina, the life and soul of any party. You won't get a better grog pulled anywhere!
What's the grog like in here, Tina?
- Much the same as everywhere else I think. To be honest I don't really know much about it. I'm more of a rum girl myself, but we've been out of stock for ages.
Hey, that's a nice necklace you're wearing.
- Why, thank you! The tavern owners make us wear the same ones. They call it 'brand recognition' or something. Never heard of it, so I've put a few extra things on mine. Steal me something new to add during your travels and I'll be very grateful.
I'm a pirate that likes to party. Where's good around here?
- Not this place, we only seem to get drunkards wanting to show you their treasure. Tracey from the Sanctuary tavern tells me there's a new place opening soon at Plunder outpost. It's called the Jolly Roger Inn, sounds like it will be fun. You can come along with us if you like.

[MYSTERIOUS STRANGERS]
First interaction
- Gloria: Let it be known that Gloria's my name, Here I await for those with fame.
- George: My name is George and I may hold the key, through stories untold upon the sea.
Any further conversation
- Your reputation is low as you arrive, my first goal's set at all companies five.

[MEN OF LOW MORAL FIBER]
First interaction
- Whaddaya need?
Hint 1
- Have you checked the back of that old map?
Hint 2
- Voyage in search of gold, eh? Sounds like you might want to talk to the Gold Hoarder on this outpost!
Hear any gossip?
- The weaponsmith at this outpost seems particularly frustrated today.

[DUKE]
First interaction
Here's to the open sea! You ready to test your mettle with the Bilge Rats?
Who are you?
I'm Duke, a representative of the Bilge Rats, a company dedicated to grand adventure and grog! If you're looking for a long tale from me, you won't find it. I can't seem to remember much of my past, but I'm sure I did something grand!
What is there to do?
I don't have any big news right now, but check back soon and I just might! My old drinking buddy, Merrick, was seen again recently, I'm sure he'll have something huge when we chat. In the meantime, do something... Daring! Oh, I almost forgot! Some salesman named Salty disappeared recently, he was talking about some "killer" weapon he was going to start selling.

[LEAVE]

Outside you can see across a wooden bridge to the left a weapons shop, an equipment shop, a clothing shop, an empty building on stilts, a tent, and the docks with the shipwright and a stall of some kind.

[WEAPONS SHOP]

Inside stands Wanda the Weaponsmith, outside sits a skeletal parrot.

[SALTY]
First interaction
- Oi! Get off... I mean... squawk.
Did you just speak?!
- No.
What kind of parrot speaks the word 'squawk'?
- Er... Polly wanna cracker? Who's a pretty boy, then? Et cetera.
How did you become a skeleton?
- I had it in me all along. Also, squawk.

[WANDA]
First interaction
- Yes, welcome to Wanda's shop. You're in the presence of a master craftswoman, you should know. Everyone should know.
You seem unhappy.
- Maybe because I spend my time crafting the finest weapons, only to get asked inane questions by stupid pirates. Nobody's willing to part with more coin to get the best. You people need a second-hand cutlass shop, not a weaponsmith of my caliber. Pah! But with the treasure I've discovered... oh yes, you won't be seeing the same old Wanda any more...
What would you recommend for my armory?
- The bottom of the ocean! Really! I bet it's full of nothing but bilge! You're here now at least, unless you made a mistake walking in here? I wouldn't be surprised.
What is the best weapon you ever made?
- Finally, an intelligent question. My best work... is yet to come! I've got an idea for something that will knock everyone's boots off. I just need a little more time... Then everyone will know who the BEST weaponsmith on the Sea of Thieves is!

[EQUIPMENT SHOP]

[TOM]
First interaction
- Hello! Why not let old Tom here show you his verrrrry FINEST!
What's so special about your stock, Tom?
- Well, well, well, get reaaaaady for INCREDIBLE craftsmanship! Items of truuuuue WONDER! Items of spectaaaaacular QUALITY! All forrrrr YOU!
What unique trinkets do you have then?
- Don't let your eyes deceive you! No, no! Don't risk a poor imitation elsewhere! Everything I sell is quality approved by yours truly! Only at Tommmmm's TRINKET STORE!
What brings you to this Outpost?
- My arms and hands! I swam all the way here from Sanctuary Outpost! I'd even swim across the Wilds to bring you amaaaaazing DEALS!

[CLOTHING SHOP]

[CECIL]
First interaction
- You've found Cecil, known throughout the outpost as a friendly guy who you can depend on.
Lovely shop you have here, been doing this long?
- Thanks for asking! I've been at Golden Sands for just over a year. Before that I did two years at Dagger Tooth outpost. Didn't like it one bit, too many unfriendly types. I love it here and intend to work hard until I'm promoted.
You look friendly enough, what would you recommend I buy?
- You've certainly asked the right person. I've been voted 'most dependable clothing advisor' for the last three years. Just take your time, please don't rush into any rash decisions. I'm not allowed to do any refunds I'm afraid.
Any chance of a discount, Cecil?
- Oh, I'd love to knock a few gold off, but sadly I can't. My boss, Mr. Blackeye, keeps a keen eye on the accounts and would surely notice. He's a rather rough type and I'd rather not get on his bad side. Come back when I'm in charge and I'll happily do a deal.

[ORDER OF SOULS TENT] Omnes In Servitium Animarum
[MADAME OLGA]
First interaction
I am known as Madame Olga. I represent the Order of Souls and our glorious cause to learn the secrets of the Skeletons.
Tell me about the Order of Souls. Are you guys as creepy as you look?
- The Order is dedicated to the study of evil, so we can learn its secrets. Venture forth and seek out those whom have fallen overboard into dark waters. Return to us the skulls of the accursed Skeletons, from which we'll acquire the knowledge they took to their graves. Together we'll learn their secrets and reclaim the treasures they withhold!
The Merchants have promised me loads of rewards. What can you offer?
- Their watches come from the Eastern seas and their spyglasses are but toys! Helping us recover knowledge from the infernal hordes is a reward of true value. However, we can bestow upon you simpler things like lanterns and tankards infused with souls from whom we have already harvested their secrets. Titles of renown too, that proclaim to others your dedication to our cause.
I like killing Skeletons. Sounds like the job for me!
- You mistake our revered mission, bone-thirsty pirate. Speak not of unfortunate violence and open your mind to their wealth of secrets. It is a thing of regret for us to ask for their heads, but ask we must. Only by reading their minds can we discover the riches they conceal.

[GOLD HOARDERS' TENT] Your Success Brings Us Fortune
[HUGH THE HOARDER] Get Map From
First interaction
- I'm Hugh the Hoarder, eagle-eyed accountant for our gold acquiring company.
Voyage
- Trying to make coin by me? Don't think I'll just hand it over, thieving pirate! I'll grant you a map to a measly chest, the Gold Hoarders require experienced pirates to search for the bigger ones. Your first map is free. I'm not happy about it, but that's company policy! If you ask me we should be charging much more for these maps, you nasty bandits hardly make it back. He hands you an X marks the spot map. If you do recover it, you'd be wise to bring it back to one of our representatives.
Tell me about the Gold Hoarders. What's in it for me?
- Significant amounts of gold, in numbers that I doubt you can count to! But you'll have to earn it fairly. I'll have no dishonesty from the likes of you. Follow the maps we give you; they lead to chests that you need to bring back to the Gold Hoarders. We'll count up the gold inside and you'll receive your remuneration.
Why do I need to bring the chests back to you?
- They're locked and we have the only keys that can open them. Which is fortunate for us, as I know you'd just keep all the gold for yourself. You pirates are all alike, if this tent wasn't pegged down, I'm sure you'd steal that as well.
You're not very trusting, are you?
- Who can blame me after what happened recently? I was taking a nap after a particularly lengthy session of counting our gold. Then I felt something on my face. First, I thought it was one of those pesky coin stealing parrots. When I opened my eyes there was a grubby pirate trying to pry the gold off my chin with a dagger! I know we're in the Sea of Thieves, but that's just unacceptable.

[MERCHANT ALLIANCE STALL] Trading Trust for Greater Prosperity
[SENIOR TRADER MAVIS]
First interaction
- Time is money to the Merchant Alliance. My name is Senior Trader Mavis and I can only spare you a few seconds.
What can you tell me about the Merchant Alliance?
- Cargo delivering as fast as possible, that's all. We'll give you contracts from our customers, you sail your ship quickly to find what they want. Once you've got what's needed, it's sails at full billow to take it to the right location.
Is working for your company profitable?
- It can be, so long as you fulfill your orders. I pay gold, with bonuses of watches and spyglasses for our most successful sailors. Forget having a grog or relaxing with a shanty though, just make the shipment. I don't even care what condition the cargo is in when you deliver it. I'll just tell the customer it was damaged in a storm.
Why do you want everything done so fast? Isn't quality of service important to you?
Pah. Service is overrated. Customers want everything yesterday. One day everything will be delivered like this, you'll see.

[SHIPWRIGHT SHOP]

[SHARON]
First interaction
HEY THERE! SHARON THE SHIPWRIGHT AT YOUR SERVICE! YOU'LL HAVE TO SPEAK UP, I'M A LITTLE DEAF AT TIMES!
You seem to be really busy, making anything interesting?
WEASILY BUDDY? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? OH, REALLY BUSY! YEAH, I AM, BUT IT'S GOING TO TAKE ME A BIT LONGER TO GET IT FINISHED! WHY DON'T YOU HAVE A LOOK AT THE STOCK I'VE GOT AT THE MOMENT?
What's on sale at the moment, Sharon?
WHAT'S ON THE SAILS? LOTS OF THINGS! I GOT ONES WITH SKULLS ON! ALSO SOME WITH TANKARDS, TRIDENTS AND EVEN A LION! GOT PLENTY OF IDEAS FOR OTHER THINGS TOO!
WHY DO YOU NEED TO SHOUT ALL THE TIME?
FEED YOUR SNOUT? THAT'S A BIT RUDE! I'M NOT A PIG YOU KNOW. HEH, HEH, IT IS FUNNY THOUGH! WELL, MUST GET BACK TO WORK. LOOK OUT FOR A QUIETER HAMMER WILL YOU, THIS ONE HASN'T BEEN THE KINDEST TO MY EARS!
